Real Identity: Rico Rodriguez — Destruction & Rebellion Specialist
John Sigma is the operational code name for Rico Rodriguez, SPHERE's primary asset in the Yapponia reclamation effort. He has been embedded in occupied Yapponian territory for an extended period and shows no signs of wanting to leave, which SPHERE takes as either exceptional dedication or a personality trait they don't question because the results are too good.
Rico Rodriguez approaches warfare with an enthusiasm that SPHERE's psychologists have described in their assessments as "concerning in a way that is extremely operationally useful." He does not approach a problem and ask whether it requires an explosion. He approaches a problem and asks what size of explosion will be most efficient. This philosophy has proven devastatingly effective against Freak infrastructure in Yapponia.
John Sigma's mission in Yapponia is twofold: destroy the physical infrastructure that supports the Freak occupation, and build the civilian resistance that will eventually make the occupation untenable from within. He does both simultaneously, often on the same day, sometimes in the same hour.
John Sigma has systematically targeted and destroyed Freak supply lines, communication relay points, command outposts, power distribution nodes, and fortified positions throughout occupied Yapponian territory. Each successful demolition degrades the Freak occupation's operational capacity and forces them to divert resources from offensive operations to infrastructure repair. SPHERE's analysts estimate that his demolition campaign has set Freak logistics back by years.
Alongside demolition operations, John Sigma works directly with Yapponian civilians who have survived the occupation — those who were neither eliminated nor fully converted by the Freak. He identifies resistance-capable individuals, organizes cells, provides operational training, and coordinates insurgent activities against Freak forces. Building a civilian resistance movement inside an actively occupied territory, while simultaneously blowing up their supply lines, is objectively extremely difficult. He is extremely good at it.
John Sigma's relationship with explosives is profound and personal. He understands demolition at a structural level — not just "make it explode" but "make exactly this part explode in exactly this way to produce exactly this cascading failure." He achieves effects with available materials that SPHERE's conventional demolition teams would require significantly more resources and planning to replicate.
Expert in operating as a single combatant against a vastly larger occupying force. He understands how to exploit the vulnerabilities of large, hierarchical military structures from the outside — how to force them to spread thin, how to make them defensive when they want to be offensive, how to make their size a liability rather than an advantage. He has been doing this to the Freak occupation in Yapponia for long enough that they have stopped treating him as a nuisance and started treating him as a strategic problem. He takes this as a compliment.
Leadership of civilian resistance networks in hostile territory. Building trust, establishing communication protocols, coordinating operations across distributed cells with minimal centralized exposure. He is very good at convincing people who have lived under occupation and learned to be afraid that they can fight back.
